Additional info: Late one evening long, long ago, a suitor took me back to the recording studio where he worked. It was deserted, and so dimly lit that I almost missed the magnificent concert grand piano (the first I’d ever seen) lurking in the shadows. He walked over to it, sat down without a word, and played this piece for me. It was pure magic. That night I promised myself that one day I’d buy a piano and play ‘Moonlight’.
Life, then other composers, 😊 got in the way and more than half a century had passed before I was ready to do something about that promise.
I dug out the score, included in the ’50 Greats’ album that came with one of my DPs, and set to work. Endless frustration - invariably I’d lose concentration and with it, my place on the page, wrecking every attempted recording.
This recording would have been consigned to the bin too: it’s not good enough but it IS a milestone. I managed to fumble right through the full 5:34 in one take. I’m submitting it as a WIP, a snapshot of where I am - and a timely reminder of how much further I still have to go.
